Dear: Preggo’s of CrossFit Vernon
Right now, at CrossFit Vernon, we have three pregnant members. Sarah, Lesley, and Kelly. All three are due in September. Two are due on the same day, which just so happens to be tomorrow. Over the last few months, I have enjoyed the experience of sharing in the journey of these three women. It’s been an educative experience for us coaches also, who have learned how to facilitate the healthy fitness of a pregnant woman!


Sarah attended our regular classes until she got pregnant, then she started attending CrossFit Lite. She has had a busy summer with her business, Crave Massage, and has spent most of her summer out of town. We enjoyed every class you attended. I know you had expressed not wanting any extra attention for being pregnant, but it was hard not to notice you gracefully moving through very technical movements and making it look easy. Sarah told us of her experience in her testimonial, “After 8 months of CrossFit I got pregnant, and now 6 months in, I do CrossFit Lite with Deanna three times per week. She helps me tailor every WOD to my ability and I modify the intensity to my comfort each day. It is my favorite part of my week and I always feel better than I did before the WOD, I intend to continue until the end of my pregnancy. I would recommend CrossFit Vernon to anyone that wants to include fitness in their life. You can do it at any level, any age and any ability.”

Kelly, you’re a ray of blonde sunshine every afternoon. Always happy, always excited to be at CrossFit. You have inspired so many women at our gym. There’s even talk of ‘getting pregnant like Kelly’ so we can get ‘strong like Kelly.’ So maybe you’ve started something there. Lol. You have truly astounded me as a coach with your consistency and dedication through your pregnancy. I don’t think you’ve missed a day and when you have it’s because you were sick, or that time you rolled your ankle and I know it is difficult for you to be away. You own and manage a thriving business and have a young daughter at home, but you make the time for CrossFit. Right now, you are tenaciously driven and so casually nine months pregnant… and the unison of those two is so nonchalant it’s unreal. I am so proud of you. You PR’d all of your lifts over the last few months, including a 20lb back squat PR this week. We know you will miss classes while you’re healing, but know that there won’t be a day that goes by that we’re not thinking about you too! Congratulations to you, Steve, and Mia.

Lesley, you came back to the gym around July so we’ve only had you there for a short period of time while you’ve been pregnant, but my word… you’re strong! I don’t know how you do it but there seems to be this little force field around your small belly, the bar just sails right by it and you move so elegantly. It really is something to watch. I’m not sure if you know how well you carry it. Lesley recently messaged us and told us a little about her experience coming back to CrossFit Vernon, and how supportive she feels it has been, “I just wanted to let you guys know how nice it is to be back at the gym, the training is phenomenal, but more than that it’s the environment that makes each class enjoyable. The last couple of weeks have been incredibly difficult (mostly due to a lack of sleep), which isn’t a complaint, more so just part of territory of pregnancy I suppose. I wanted to acknowledge not only the coaches, but the other members and their constant encouragement and kind words toward my effort during class… when most days I feel like the warm up alone would be work enough. Pregnancy aside, we all likely experience days where the last thing we feel like doing is 3 AMRAP’s in one workout… but there’s nothing better than on those days, getting through it due to the constant support and encouragement of your peers. Thanks everyone, it’s definitely good to be back at Crossfit Vernon.”

I hope that through sharing your story, people can understand a little more about fitness and pregnancy. I think that it’s valuable to understand that each female’s experience in pregnancy will vary. Many can become quite sick, as Sarah did in the beginning. I believe, when you become pregnant, you should stick to the same fitness routines you’ve developed. That is, if you’re very active, stay active. Listen to your Doctor, and listen to your body, take your supplements, sleep and recovery very seriously… each of you ladies have done that! Each of you ladies have all taken initiative to understand your bodies and to scale workouts when needed and when necessary, making the appropriate changes to movements like box jumps, push-ups, burpees, running, and pull-ups, or anything that bothered you at all. You have made the choice for you and your growing baby to have healthy endorphins, increased cardiovascular strength, increased blood flow, and healthy hormone production. Not to mention an increase in strength and power! You have inspired so many people at the gym and we are all proud of you. Best of luck in your childbirths, I imagine it will be much like Brittanys’ experience… when the Doctor told her to start pushing and had to say, “whoa whoa, not that hard!!!” Lol.
You are all strong, powerful, intelligent women who have made an educated choice to be healthy during pregnancy.
